Basic White Sauce / Bechamel Sauce

This Basic white sauce is so important because its the base for so many recipes and is used in lasagne, fish pie, macaroni and cheese and so many others. Which is why its so important to perfect a great white sauce. You only need 15 minutes to make this sauce.




Bechamel White Sauce



Preparation Time 2 minutes

Cook Time 10-12 minutes

Yields 2 cups


Ingredients


4 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 cups warm whole milk






Instructions


  1. Place a saucepan on a low heat. Add the butter and melt it, but make sure you don’t let it burn.

  2. Add the flour and immediately whisk it in. Allow it to cook on a low heat for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and will smell slightly nutty.

  3. Slowly add the warm whole milk, half a cup at a time.

  4. Whisk it well between additions to ensure a smooth mixture and no lumps.

  5. Once you have added the milk, cook it on low for 3-4 minutes until thickened. You will know its done when the sauce can coat the back of the spoon.

  6. Adjust the seasoning and then turn off the heat. Use as desired.
